It is common knowledge that food products should be stored in air tight containers. Plastic buckets or containers are very popular today for food storage. However, if you want to keep your emergency foods in plastic containers, you need to make sure they are made of food grade plastic. Such containers could usually be bought in your local hardware stores as well as in Wal-Mart. Many restaurants could also give you them for free. All you need is make sure they never held chemicals or other toxic items.
It is also important to understand that food products live much longer when kept in the oxygen free atmosphere. There are special oxygen absorbers on the market today. When put into a container they remove oxygen from the air leaving your food in a partial vacuum.
Never open oxygen absorbers before you are ready to use them. Otherwise they will take oxygen from the air and become useless. Prepare everything before you open the bag of absorbers. If you have some unused absorbers left, just store them in a small air tight jar.
You should put the food into the buckets. Do not put too much at a time. Shake the bucket well after each portion of food is poured in. the bucked should be filled too about a half inch from the top. Now your could take three oxygen absorbers and put them into the bucket of food. Then quickly put the lids on the buckets and shut them tightly. In a couple of hours oxygen absorbers will create a vacuum and the buckets will become perfectly sealed. The atmosphere inside the buckets is not perfect for long term storage. Do not forget to mark each container with the date, the type of food put inside, and its weight. A permanent marker could be used for this purpose.
The next important concern is where to keep all these food products. Most people live in small houses and have to keep lots of various items outside. Others live in over stuffed homes where there is no room for food storage. What is possible to be done? May be you should try to sell some items that you do not use any more. This way you will be able to clean a closet and to put your food storage inside of it. No matter where you keep your foods as long as they are kept under proper conditions. Your food storage should be kept in a cool and dry place away from heating devices. Preferably this place should also be a dark one. If you have such a place inside your house – you are lucky. You could be sure that your food storage will be protected from the elements and the animals.
